Coming to a Podcast Near You

Springheel Jack is currently looking into the possibility of advertising on podcasts with a new company called Kiptronic. The rates are reasonable as long as your not trying to reach a very specific niche market, say the wedding/bride-to-be market or North Boynton Beach, FL.

One obvious downside to podcasting for SHJ is the visual nature of our product. Hearing about our shirts won't have the same effect as seeing them. At the same time, I'm interested in podcasting because I believe it will lead to video podcasting, which would be a perfect fit for us. Jon, the owner of Kiptronic, believes video advertising is only a few months away - just in time for me to learn Flash and develop a commercial or two.

A bigger issue right now is who to reach out to. Personally, I feel our shirts have a lot of appeal to graphic artists or people who like graphic art, urban dwellers and people who like rock shows. I would call them our target demographic based on my non-scientific hunch.

Who do you think our shirts appeal to? How would you market towards them?

If anyone out there has ideas for an ad we should do, or would like to help write copy for an audio ad, please email me at tom@springheeljack.net.

I think your commercials should be "A day in the life of a Springheel Jack shirt." Then, just imagine what interesting things you think people wearing your shirts would do.

i'll be honest, tom, and maybe this is just my being cynical, but i think there are better uses for your advertising budget than podcasting and the possible possibility of video podcasting. i say, learn flash and if video podcasting comes about, cross that bridge when you come to it. in the meanwhile, people have to SEE your teeshirts to be interested in buying them. how about ads in cool magazines? websites? i don't know how much that costs, but it might be worth looking into, if you haven't already. there are lots of local or regional magazines dying for advertisers. find other t-shirt companies and ask how they started their marketing. i bet that would be a HUGE help. or get more creative. email pdfs of poster ads to your friends around the country and have us post them around our towns for free. make a myspace profile and solicit friends. my inclination would be to exhaust those free, visual options first. also, valentine's day is coming up and it seems to me that there are many more options for you around such consumer-driven holidays.

Eden, you raise a valid point about not being able to SEE the t-shirts. Here's the thing: this doesn't cost much (relative to print media), it gets my foot in the door in terms video casting, and it's another avenue for attracting attention to the site. Is it ideal? No, but it beats some alternatives. However, I like your idea about getting a myspace account and developing other FREE marketing ideas. I'll set up a post just about that where people can contribute other suggestions.
